Sourcing

From a run to a quote

ForgeLab prepares the hand-off. It does not place orders, and it will not invent a supplier.

Kinds of shop, not made-up names

The supplier section describes the type of shop that fits your part (for example an enclosed-chamber FDM service, or a press-brake shop), with typical minimums and lead times. These are deliberately not business names: a name we cannot verify would send you to the wrong place. Search for shops of that type near you and use the questions ForgeLab lists.

Files to send

  • RFQ pack: requirements, expected cost, bill of materials, the questions to answer, and what is not included.
  • BOM (CSV): the made part plus purchased hardware the brief implies.
  • Analytic STL / DXF flat pattern: for simple enclosures, shafts and bent plates. They are stand-ins built from the concept's dimensions, not finished CAD.

Ask for three quotes at three quantities

The unit price at your quantity, at 2× and at 5×; the tooling or setup and who owns it; lead time for a first article and the run; and the inspection reports supplied. Log each quote on the run to see how it compares with the estimate; well above or below usually means a different scope, material or finish.

Prove it before the run

The Proving it works card lists standards to check, tests to run on a first article, an inspection plan and a ranked risk register — all from the requirements in your brief. It is a checklist for a test lab or compliance engineer, not certification.
